The Hawaii Craftsmen 48th Annual Statewide Juried Exhibition gets underway Oct. 27 in Honolulu. Emerging and established artists residing in Hawaii are invited to enter traditional or nontraditional crafts with a fresh approach or point-of-view.
The exhibition, which runs through Nov. 20 at Honolulu Museum of Art School, is open to functional and nonfunctional 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional art in categories of clay, fiber, glass, wood, metal, stone and mixed media. Sept. 15 is the closing date for online entry registration at www.callforentry.org. No mailed or intake/jurying day entries will be accepted.
All Big Island entries will be viewed by the juror on Oct. 18 at Hilo’s Hawaii Museum of Contemporary Art (East Hawaii Cultural Center) at 141 Kalakaua Street in Hilo. Intake will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by jurying from noon to 2 p.m. A juror’s lecture has been slated from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Artwork pickup will take place between 3 and 4 p.m.

Juror selected cash awards will be presented at an opening reception Oct. 27 in Honolulu.
This year’s juror is Lowery Stokes Sims, a specialist in modern and contemporary art known for her particular expertise in the work of African, Latino, Native, and Asian American artists. Currently curator emerita of the Museum of Art and Design in New York, Sims prior served as the Charles Bronfman International curator and the William and Mildred Ladson chief curator. She was also on the education and curatorial staff of The Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1972 to 1999 where she curated more than 30 exhibitions. She also served as executive director, president and adjunct curator for the permanent collection at The Studio Museum in Harlem from 2000 to 2007.
Sims, who has also lectured and guest curated exhibitions nationally and internationally, also served on the selection jury for the World Trade Center Memorial in 2003 and 2004. She is also on the board of the Tiffany Foundation as well as Art Matters Inc.

Juror Lowery Stokes Sims will offer a lecture from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Honolulu Museum of Art School Room 101.
The exhibition is free and open for public viewing Oct. 27 to Nov. 20 at the Honolulu Museum of Art School Main Gallery at 1111 Victoria St. in Honolulu. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. For more infroamtion, call 532-8741.
